What is decency?

I got to know about the decency bill or Nudity, sexual intimidation bill when a sister NGO met with some of us to raise our voices against the bill being proposed by Senator Eme Ekaette. My first reaction is who made her the custodian of morality when there are vital issues such as the CEDAW Bill which is a vital document that will put women in their right position or maybe she has forgotten MDG Goals 1,2, 3,4 and 5 that are vital to women and Children? Why can't our 'distinguished' senator think about women issues especially their representation in governance. It is annoying and at the same time phony to think the only thing our dear Eka can think about is Nudity. What is nudity pls!

Electoral violence

Electoral violence is one of the major resons women in Nigeria are reluctant about participation in politics especially as some of them are taken advantage of during the process of election. Different reports during the last general election in Nigeria explained this problem. For example in Osun state South-West Nigeria a female politician was seriously molested by the opposing party to the extent that she was hospitalised. Alot need to be done about security during election so as to encourage women to participate in this important development. Pls join me in discussing the solution to this problem!

Electoral Act

In continuation of my discussion on electoral act. Some other issues that need to be look into is the entrenchment of the affirmative action into the party leadership. It is noted that most of the political parties we have only allow women to be on the executive as "women leader" offcourse who do you expect tobe a woman leader if not a woman. This should be properly outlined in such that women can take part in other aspect apart from this role.
Citizenship is another problem women contend with when it comes to participation in political office. They are tossed up and down between their husband's state of origin and theirs. Women such as Tokunbo Awolowo, Remi Adiukwu Bakare and Hilda Funso-Williams went through the problem of indigeniety.
Pls join me in discussing this issues!

Gender Issues in the Nigerian Electoral Act

Currently the Federal Government of Nigeria is trying to review the Electoral Act, which is the document the guide electoral activities in Nigeria. There is a committee, which has two women as members. They have been to about two states now and they are presently in Oyo State South-West, Nigeria.

Political parties and Civil Society Organisations are raising so many issues. My organisation, Gender And Development Action (GADA) is women based organisation, which means we are concerned about the gender issues in the electoral act, especially as it has to do with representation in governance. We are advocating for more opportunities for women in governance, which can be achieved through finance whereby women are given financial support to be able to participate in politics.

There are more issues and this is what this discussion is all about. Please join me in looking at gender issues in the Nigerian Electoral Act.
